I like to distort bodies. The idea here is to fill the page with the figure.
ink on paper
14x17 inches
The washy inking gives this piece a lovely atmosphere.
ink on paper
9x12 inches
This is a very early success at figure modeling. This model is featured several times on this page. I liked her.
ink on paper
5.5x8.5 inches
On very quick sketches, I often put the model on the same page. I prefer to use good paper so this approach is efficient. These two figures would be the result of two or five minute poses. The juxtaposition of the characters evokes submission and dominance in a sort of intense serenity.

Another quick pose that ended up a keeper. This pose was likely two minutes in which I did the work in blue. The pose is wonderfully dynamic and the turned head makes the viewer a participant in the scene. What has she been waiting to say? Or hear?

This guy looked like the image of Jesus that Western civilization has popularized. His pinky separated from the rest of his fingers as it rested on his thigh such that his pinky ends up looking like a thumb. In other words he would have two right hands. So doing some religious sorcery, I came up with this title.

10x13 inches
Again doing multiple quick poses on a single page. Again the juxtaposition of the the poses is evocative. They are clearly brothers and they clearly have feelings.
ink on paper
14x17 inches
Two quick sketches made complete by positioning. The notion of rivalry comes from the sly grin on the left figure and personal bias on my part.

He is playing a statue on the stage in a play who gets up forty-five minutes into the show and scares the shit out of everyone.
ink on paper

This is some early work.

Because of my ego, I sometimes thought the models were flirting with me. She was not winking but it is something of a come hither pose.
ink on paper
18x24 inches
The original motivation behind distorting the figure is compositional and the bonus how that shapes what the figure suggests to the viewer. I feel she is unbothered.
ink on paper
11x14 inches
Again I see a certain serenity in this figure.
ink on paper
11x14 inches
A wonderful statuesque dynamic pose.
ink on paper
14x7 inches
This was a quick pose so I used a smaller page. It’s a great pose (and the following pose is too) that would be well worth further exploration.
ink on paper
5.5x8.5 inches
I was looking down at the page scrambling to complete the previous pose and looked up and she was looking me straight in the eyes. It is definitely something to have a beautiful nude stranger stare at you as you run your eyes over their body. Another great pose I would like to take more time with.
ink on paper
5.5x8.5 inches
A figure posed with a staff often gives an epic feeling to the image. She surveils her command.
ink on paper
10x13 inches
The jokey title belies but also implies a thoughtful pose.
ink on paper
10x13.5 inches
The atmosphere of quick poses has a nice extension. Although these pieces would not be complete by the end of class, I tended to complete them in the spirit of quickness from home.
ink on paper
10.5x13.5 inches
This is such a subtly strong pose. It is an honor to observe these models who have such great physical presence and sense of what the observer sees. They enhance the work so much.
ink on paper
10.5x13.5 inches
Another wonderful and dynamic pose.
ink on paper
10.5x13.5 inches
This image would be so different without the distortions.
ink on paper
10.5x13.5 inches
Being freely inspired and purely instinctive is a lot of fun.
ink on paper
9x12 inches
This image and the next suggest opposite emotions from the figures while being the same pose. I think that is fascinating.
ink on paper
14x17 inches
A slight difference in the arch of the back and a face less buried makes the pose peaceful.
ink on paper

Intentionally Matissey.
